Call of Duty

Before I went home for the summer vacation, my home received a notice sent from the government. It said I could be called upon to return to the army for reviewing my martial skills for one week. I had heard some friends of mine had returned to the army twice or even three times. I thought I am waived because of my absence but it seems it is not true. Fortunately I hadn’t received the formal call-up so far or my precious summer vacation would be destroyed.

Because she said she wants to see me in a military suit in photos, I scanned the only two big memorable photos.

Graduation from the class of basic officers in Infantry School. Captain, two platoon commanders and new second lieutenants who will stay in the school were in the second row.

Captain Tzeng, Second Lieutenant Chiang and students graduating from the class of armoured infantry for corporals. These young guys sometimes complained to me that the captain tortured them. I was in sympathy with them but couldn’t do anything to fix it. At least they trusted me and were willing to tell me about their thoughts. Easing students' nerves was my biggest contribution as a platoon commander. It was pleasing to see all of them stood the captain’s challenges and finished the program. This graduation photo was an acclaim to the soldiers who were qualified to fight for people’s freedom and the democratic regime.
